Dr Craig Brighouse  

Dr Craig Brighouse BVSc

Companion Pet Veterinarian

1992 Massey, New Zealand Graduate. With 5 years overseas experience in United Kingdom. Interests include both general and orthopaedic surgery as well as practice management.

As a keen multisport competitor Craig can often be seen running, cycling, paddling and swimming throughout the Waikato region. He recently placed 2nd in the Veteran division of the 2010 Longest day Coast to Coast, competed in 2011 Xterra World Champs in Hawaii as is due to compete as a NZ age group representative at the 2012 Triathlon World Champs.

Referral Surgeon

Gaining his Bachelor of Veterinary Science with distinction from Massey he worked in Taumaranui for 3 years before moving to Essex in the UK for 10 years where he developed a surgical referral service and gained a certificate in Small Animal Surgery. Ian then moved to Pretoria where he worked as a referral small animal surgeon at the University of Pretoria for 7 years eventually acting as head of small animal surgery for 2 years. Since returning in mid 2010 to NZ he has been working with Hamilton Veterinary Services to develop the Veterinary Referral Centre for companion animal referral surgical work.

Dave is an experienced companion pet veterinarian with many years of experience in mixed practice, he also has a particular interest in avian medicine. Dave enjoys classic cars and aviation.

Companion Pet Veterinarian

After a few years break travelling around Europe and working in the UK we are pleased that Juliet has rejoined our team upon her return to NZ. When she wasn't travelling she spent most of her time in the UK working in the North of England at Stanhope Park Veterinary Hospital in Darlington, Yorkshire.

Juliet has completed many post graduate courses in pathology, neurology and imaging and is our go to person for complex medical cases.

Dr Doug Black  

Dr Douglas Black BVMs, MACVSc

Equine Veterinarian

Douglas graduated in 1983 from Glasgow University. He spent two years in mixed practice in North Yorkshire (Herriot Country), before making the move to Australia where he spent a year doing locum work for various equine practices. He started with Hamilton Veterinary Services in 1986. His workload consists mainly of thoroughbred stud and stable work, with particular interests in lameness and poor performance syndrome. In 1992 Douglas passed his membership exams for the Australian College.  He is also a member of the endoscopy panel at Karaka Yearling Sales, performs racecourse duties for Waikato Racing Club and a trustee for the Waikato Equine Intensive Care Unit. Outside of work Douglas enjoys traveling, which suits his passion for good food and wine. He is a keen golfer and tennis player and an avid rugby follower.

Dr Noel Power

Equine Veterinarian

Noel qualified as a Veterinary Surgeon in Dublin, Ireland in 1991. He worked for a year in mixed practice in Northern Ireland before making the move to Te Awamutu, New Zealand where he worked in mainly dairy and equine practice until 1997. He spent the next five years in the UK working solely with horses, including 3 years at an Equine Surgical Referral Centre. He returned to NZ to join Hamilton Veterinary Services in 2003. His areas of interest include medicine, lameness, dentistry, reproduction with a particular interest in the horses foot. He is chief anesthetist at the Equine Hospital. Noel enjoys life in the great outdoors and will take any opportunity to get out fishing or hunting. He is a DIY enthusiasts and spends many hours in the garden.

Dr Alec Jorgensen

Equine Veterinarian

Alec trained and graduated in Bristol, U.K in 1998. Since graduation he has worked predominantly in equine practices in the U.K and the past four years at the University of Pennsylvania in the U.S.A. There he was involved in the teaching of students and gained his qualifications as Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Equine Specialty).

He joined Hamilton Veterinary Services in 2005 and is looking forward to the varied workload of general equine practice. Alecs particular areas of interest are in lameness, sports medicine and imaging. At a personal level he is interested in triathlon and ironman, having competed in a large number of events. He is also finds time for boating and fishing and is a keen rugby follower.

   

 

Dr John Hunter

Equine Veterinarian

John qualified as a veterinary surgeon in Brisbane in 1966. Having spent time at Cambridge Vet Service, John joined Hamilton Veterinary Services in 1972. He has a vast amount of varied experience in equine practice. John has a particular interest in the breeding of thoroughbred horse and has extensive knowledge of all aspects of foal, mare and stallion medicine and reproduction. He is held in high regard by veterinarians and breeders nationwide. Outside of the practice he can be found on the golf course or fishing.

Dr Orla Fahey  

 

Dr Orla Roan B Eq Sc, BVSc

Equine Veterinarian

Orla graduated from Massey University in 2006 with a veterinary degree, having qualified with an Equine Science (hons) degree from The University of Limerick (Ireland) in 1996. She joined the Hamilton Veterinary team in July 2007 and her particular areas of interest are internal medicine, neonatology (foals), diagnostic imaging and anaesthesiology.

Orla enjoys the great outdoors and spends her spare hours travelling, tramping, horse riding, diving and even fishing.

   

 

Dr Robyn Fraser BVSc

Equine Veterinarian

Robyn graduated from Melbourne University in 2003 and then worked in a racetrack practice in Flemington for 2 1/2 years before moving to country Victoria for a stud season. A move to the UK followed with 18 months in a large Newbury equine practice. Amove to New Zealand followed with Robyn joining Hamilton Veterinary Service in 2010.

Robyn especially enjoys stud and racing work. Outside her work hours she enjoys the outdoors and can be found cycling, running, hiking and walking her blue heeler.

Greg Quinn

Specialist Equine Surgeon

Greg graduated from Massey University in 1994 and worked in mixed practice in Hawkes Bay before departing on his OE that ended up lasting 14 years. Greg settled in the UK and worked in a referral equine practice before undertaking a residency in Equine Surgery at the University of Bristol. The training enabled Greg to gain specialist qualifications in equine surgery; completing a Royal College certificate in soft tissue surgery and later gaining his ‘boards’ by passing Diploma in surgery of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons.
After a short spell in a racing practice in Melbourne Greg returned to the UK and worked in referral hospitals in Cheshire and for the last four years in the East Midlands.
Greg’s special interests and expertise are in minimally invasive surgical techniques (arthroscopy and laparoscopy), airway and sinus surgery, wound management and specialist dental surgery.
He decided it was time to return to New Zealand after a surgical position arose at Hamilton Vet Services as well as the opportunity for a better lifestyle and work-life balance.
Outside of work Greg is a keen golfer and enjoys running, cycling, tennis, skiing and spending time with his young and expanding family.

Dr Harry Caldicott

Equine Veterinarian


Harry’s original background was as a medicinal chemist in the pharmaceutical industry working at the cutting edge of drug research, and he completed a Ph.D. at the Welsh School of Pharmacy designing, making and testing a new treatment for cancer.  
However he had grown up on the back of a horse and had a latent desire to, as a mature student, return to university to become a veterinarian and graduated from Massey University in 2011.  He has particular interest in veterinary farriery and dentistry.  
When not working with horses, he can be found amongst an ever-expanding collection of instruments, microphones and recording equipment writing music or learning to fly light aircraft.

Hugh Kingham  

Dr Hugh Kingham B.V.Sc

General Manager & Mixed Animal Veterinarian

Hugh graduated from Massey University in 1974, spending two years in a mixed practice in Southland. Followed by two years travelling overseas and working as a locum. He was originally from Taihape and on his return in 1979, he joined Hamilton Vets.

His workload is now predominately providing veterinary services to dairy farms and small blocks. Over the years he has decreased his involvement with small animals and is the director responsible for the management of the practice.

Hugh enjoys maintaining his large garden and is actively involved in golf, skiing, cycling, tramping and watching his children's sport.

 

Dr Murray Bertram

Equine & Farm Animal Veterinarian

Murray attended school in Hamilton and graduated as a Veterinary Surgeon from Massey University in 1975. He has worked at Hamilton Veterinary Services since graduating and as such has a huge amount of local experience and knowledge. On the large animal side he is regarded as the Jack of all trades and can turn his hand adeptly to horses, cows, deer, sheep and goats. His work with horses is predominantly with studs and pleasure horses in the northern area of the practice. Murray's spare time is taken up working with his own horses, tramping or indulging in a spot of DIY.

As well as a dedicated veterinary nurse Alice is a keen advocate for animal welfare cases often taking on the nursing of wildlife cases she is also the owner of many household pets.

Sarah is the Veterinary Referral Services co-ordinator and nurse. Sarah is likely to be your first contact for referral and follow up care as Dr Ian Millward is often in surgery and first communications often occur via Sarah.
